Guardian removes Izeze, Bonuola, 2 consultants, pencils down 100 others for sack
The Management of the Guardian has sacked the newspaper’s Managing Director, Emeka Izeze; the company’s Executive Consultant, Lade Bonuola and two other consultants and targets 100 other workers for immediate sack.
The sack is as a result of the biting economic hardship in the country and the need to downsize and reposition the newspaper.
Izeze had been the Guardian’s Managing Director/Editor-in-Chief until the position was split about two years ago, which made him the Managing Director while Debo Adeshina becomes the Editor-in-Chief. He has held this position for over a decade. Prior to that, he was Editor of The Guardian.
Also, Bonuola has been a founding member of the Guardian newspaper since inception and has contributed immensely to its growth.
A top Guardian source told TheNEWS that Izeze, Bonuola and two other top consultants were sacked on Friday by the management of the company.
Our source said 100 other staff have been pencilled down for sack and that in the next few days, they would be issued sack letters.
There is apprehension in the newspaper as staff anxiously await their fate as no one knows who will go next.
The Guardian was established in 1983 by Alex Ibru, an entrepreneur, and Stanley Macebuh, a top journalist with the Daily Times newspapers. The Guardian was a pioneer in introducing high-quality journalism to Nigeria with thoughtful editorial content. The paper was first published on 22 February 1983 as a weekly, appearing on Sundays. It started daily publication on 4 July, 1983.
In the 1990s and early 2000, the Guardian was the flagship of the Nigeria newspaper until poor management, poor staff welfare contributed to its dwindling fortune.
In recent times, the newspaper has been struggling to weather the storm since the death of its founder, while key staff of the newspaper left for greener pasture somewhere else due to the poor promotion and freelance policy of the newspaper.
