MTV.com spoke with Pietermaritzburg-born musician Candice Pillay about working with hip hop heavyweights Dr. Dre, Eminem and Kendrick Lamar for Dre’s long awaited ‘Compton’ album.

Pillay appears on “Genocide” and “Medicine Man” off the new Dre album and she spoke with MTV News on Friday (7 August) about what she learned from working with the legend(s).

On meeting Dr. Dre:
“He really made an impression on me from the moment I met him. You never know what to expect when you meet someone of his caliber. But, from the first meeting, he was one of the most humble guys I’ve met. I’ve worked with a lot of people in this industry and besides the fact that he’s extremely talented, he’s down to earth.”

On working with Eminem:
“Em is just incredible. I can’t even explain… Being from South Africa, we never got all the rap music that you got in the States; we got the most popular so it was Dre, Snoop, Em, Biggie and Pac. And I’ve always been a huge Em fan so it was a blessing for me to have this opportunity… He gave us a plethora of stuff to choose from and then he went back and forth. And then we finally went with the verse that you hear. It was just insane to me.”

On working with Kendrick:
“Kendrick’s amazing. He’s always been a supporter of my stuff. He’s the dream, man. We’ve seen him come up in L.A. and his success and what he says is so important. That’s what I love about Kendrick. He has the platform and says what’s important for young people that are listening to him to hear and see. He came to Dre’s and off the top, his writing is insane. And he killed his verse, as usual. “I love how he brings the energy up on all the records and his presence is so great. We left him for last because we knew that he was gonna kill it. Amazing artist. I’m so happy for him and all his success. He definitely deserves it.”

On recording ‘Medicine Man’:
“‘Medicine Man’ is my baby. If you listen to [it] compared to everything else on the album, it’s a very different record; I feel like it’s a younger generation’s record. Of course, Dre loved it. And the only person who could fit on that record is Em.”

On recording “Genocide”:
“It was produced by Dem Jointz. The way that record started was Marsha Ambrosius — who’s an amazing writer — came up with the hook. There was that little section on there that had the rap-sing part, which is my verse. Jointz played me that record. I was like, ‘Damn, that sh-t is crazy.’ I was like, ‘What are y’all doing with that verse?’ They were looking for someone to sing kind of like a reggae rap. I was like, ‘Let me at it. That’s my sh-t. I could do that.’”

“I recorded it and Jointz was telling me, ‘You know what? I don’t think this is gonna work. Your style is too perfect, you need to sound more raspy. It just sounds too perfect.’ He didn’t like it. So, we left it at that. “That night, I had a cold. The next morning, he hits me up and says ‘I have a plan, why don’t you rap not on the beat at all? Just ignore the beat and rap at a different cadence where it doesn’t even go. I think it might be dope.’ I was like, ‘That doesn’t sound right. When you rap, you want to be on pocket but we could try it.’ Of course, I had a cold so my voice was extremely raspy. He recorded it. I tried a different cadence and I loved it.

“Dre had been working with me for a awhile before that and he knew me for my very soft vocals. He was like, ‘Yo, you killed that sh-t! I did not know you could do that. I love it. It’s amazing.’ That was one of the first ones we got on there.”
